JANUARY 2009

Heroes for the Homeless is proud to announce its 2009 Advisory Board:

*  January 4th:  Heroes scouts Woodinville, WA for the 2009 One Night Count. 

*  January 2nd:  Tricia attends the Compass Center Homeless Remembrance service for those who died outdoors in 2008.



DECEMBER 2008

*  Heroes for the Homeless honors CITY TEAM MINISTRIES.  Due to a budget shortfall, the mission must close its doors to clients on December 27, 2008.  City Team has been serving Seattle's homeless since 1902.  More than 100 beds will be lost as a result of this closure.

 

*  December 22th:  Dine Out for a Cause at the Green Leaf Restaurant.  Green Leaf will generously donate 20% of your bill to Heroes if you mention the charity to your server.  The fund raiser runs all day 11am-10pm on Monday, Dec 22nd. -- CANCELLED DUE TO SNOW!  Will be rescheduled at a later date.

*  December 21st:  Heroes joins SHARE/WHEEL on the longest night of the year (Winter Solstace) to honor the 45+ homeless who have died outdoors this year.  This day has been designated by the National Coalition for the Homeless as Homeless Persons' Memorial Day

*  December 20th:  2nd Anniversary Night Outreach

*  December 16th and 17th:  Heroes for the Homeless supports the Camp Out for Survival at City Hall sponsored by the Real Change Organizing Project.  In addition to food, we also distributed outdoor survival supplies donated by our supporters.

*  December 9th:  Tricia speaks at the National Association of Professional Mortgage Women, Seattle Chapter



NOVEMBER 2008

*  November 29th:  Heroes for the Homeless reaches 10k pbj sandwiches and 6k cups of hot chocolate on Outreach 27.

*  November 8th:  Tricia speaks at the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Annual Founder's Day Luncheon.  The Sorority honored Heroes for the Homeless, TreeHouse, and the Millionaire's Club with a special recognition award to charities serving Seattle's homeless.

November 7th:  Bao Nguyen travels to Kansas City, MO to accept the Life in the Spirit award from Glori Radio on behalf of Heroes for the Homeless.  Bao debuted a short documentary on the work of the charity at the awards ceremony. 


OCTOBER 2008

*  Heroes for the Homeless appears in the October 23, 2008 edition of the Bellevue Reporter, and other Eastside Reporters in syndicate with PNWLocalNews.

October 19th:  Residents of Nickelsville create art to display at the 2008 Seattle Food and Wine Experience at Qwest Field Event Center later in the month. 

*  10pm, October 1stAnna, Mehran and Tricia help move Nickelsville to its new location in Discovery Park.  Heroes for the Homeless is committed to supporting the residents while their organizing committee works with city and state officials to find a more permanent location.


SEPTEMBER 2008

*  4am, Monday September 22nd:  Tricia sets up tents in the dark to help launch Nickelsville.  Nicki, Drew, Bao, Mehran and Patrick join her over the next two nights to feed the homeless individuals living at this encampment.




*  Drew Bouta joins the Heroes Advisory Board as Director of Business Operations.


AUGUST 2008

*  Heroes partners with the People's Harm Reduction Alliance to better serve clients. 

August 27th, Tricia attends a cleansing ritual sponsored by Women in Black to honor Troy Lee Peters, a homeless man shot to death in Seattle's Central District.  The police have chosen not to investigate this homicide.  Mr. Peters was also a defendant in the Seattle Community Court, arrested on a dangerous weapons charge.  When asked why he was carrying a pocket knife, he said he used it to cut open can goods.                                                                      

                                                *  Homeless people and allies made a statement Friday, Aug. 29th at Westlake Park in support of more solutions to the citywide shortage of emergency shelter by holding a die-in.   Tricia Lapitan (pictured face down, bottom left) was one of those who lay on the sidewalk holding signs with the names of the 21 people who have died outside so far this year.  Tricia's sign read: Steven Proctor, died January 2008, at 48.


*  Heroes for the Homeless is recognized for our work in the homeless community and receives the Life in the Spirit Awardfrom Igniting the Fire Media Group and GLORI Radio in Kansas City.  Award ceremonies are November 7, 2008.

*  Heroes receives the Founder's Legacy of Service award from the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority.  Award cermonies are November 8, 2008.  The Delta Psi Sigma Chapter in Seattle will also partner with Heroes in the upcoming months to help serve those in need.

*  Fred and Tricia join SHARE/WHEEL and Women in Black in vigil on August 10th, calling for the Mayor to fund much needed emergency shelter for homeless women.  On August 13, Tricia joins Women in Black at a protest on the steps of City Hall urging the Mayor to address this urgent need. 


JULY 2008

*  Heroes joins the Women in Black Homeless Place of Remembrance project.  The committee is working with city officials, community leaders, and a professional design team to create a permanent structure at Victor Steinbrueck Park in honor of the homeless individuals who died by violence or exposure since the year 2000.


JUNE 2008

*  Heroes featured as Change Agents in the June 4-10, 2008 edition of Real Change.  (read the article)

*  Laureen, Tricia, and Dena participate in the Real Change sponsored Camp-4-Unity, June 8th and 9th.

June 3rd, Heroes attend The Salvation Army's Annual Soup Line Luncheon at the Westin Hotel in Seattle.



MAY 2008

*  Hee Jung and Tricia attend the SHARE/WHEEL Ralley on May 18th where organizers are working to build momentum for camp that will be called "Nickelsville."  The project which is being developed in protest against the inhumane encampment sweeps, will also serve as a safe haven for those affected directly by the Mayor's agenda to make homelessness invisible in Seattle. 

*  May 17th, Ruby Gaines hosts the 2nd Annual Benefit Tea to benefit the homeless community.  This year's theme The Plight of the Homeless, What Now? will include a panel discussion of the county's long-term strategy to end homelessless.  Panel guests include representatives from the Seattle King County Coalition for the Homeless, DESC, DSHS, Heroes for the Homeless and other community leaders.


APRIL 2008

Dena, Bill and Beth assist a young homeless couple who sleep under the I-5 overpass with their small dog.  Beth helps the team communicate with them through sign language.  Heroes for the Homeless provides emergency and longer-term food, clothing, dog food and other supplies. 

Tricia accepts an invitation from The Salvation Army to chair the Advisory Council for the William Booth Center in Seattle. 


MARCH 2008

*  Heroes for the Homeless serves nearly 400 people on March 22, 2008 (Outreach 19).

*
  Tricia speaks at the March 5, 2008 Magic Works Alumni meeting in Burien.  She participates in their homeless feeding program on March 30, 2008 at its new location, Seattle's Outdoor Feeding Station on 6th and Columbia.

*  Laurie Clark assembles over 150 hygiene kits as part of her high school community service project.  The kits include washcloths, mouthwash, antibacterial wipes, razors, deodorant, hand lotion, and shampoo.  Thanks for your service to those less fortunate Laurie!


FEBRUARY 2008

*  On Friday February 1, 2008, Tricia, Laureen, Patrick, Mhike, Hee and Jane hand out 2100 cupcakes to the homeless throughout Seattle.  More information under Special Events.

St. James Espresso in Kirkland sponsors Heroes as Charity-of-the-Month. 


JANUARY 2008

Marcia Adams Landry, Laureen Y. and Tricia Lapitan participate in the January 28, 2008 City sponsored Public Forum on Encampment Sweeps.  Tricia offered comments in opposition of the proposed legislation citing inadequate notice and criminal histories perpetuating a person's homeless status.  Comments from other individuals included the inhumane/violent nature of these sweeps and a call for City officials to work with community leaders on a reasonable response to this crisis.

*  Charter members Dena Murray and Tricia Lapitan join the Seattle King County Coalition for the Homeless on January 25, 2008 for their annual One Night Count.  The Count begins at 2am and attempts to document the number of homeless individuals. 


Heroes for the Homeless ends our
phenomenal 1st year
with the delivery of:

- 4063 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
- 2407 cups of hot chocolate
- 1609 bananas

bottles of water



December 2007

*  We extend our Outreach efforts to three missions this month, serving over 650 people.

*  December 21, 2007: Tricia stands in silent vigil with Women in Black to honor the 42 homeless individuals who died in King County by exposure or violence in 2007.

*  December 20, 2007:  one year anniversary, Night Outreach

*  December 17, 2007: Heroes teams up with Canyon's Restaurant in Bothell for Dine Out for a Cause!

*  Heroes for the Homeless teams up with St. James Espresso in downtown Kirkland to help Tent City.  We help deliver baked goods to more than 80 men and women living in the area surrounding Holy Spirit Lutheran Church in Kirkland.


November 2007

Heroes for the Homeless joins the Seattle King County Coalition for the Homeless.

*  We extend our Outreach efforts to two missions this month, serving more than 350 people.



October 2007

*  Heroes for the Homeless supports the artistic work of SIS Productions and hopes to create more visibility about the subject of homelessness. 

*  Tricia speaks at the JustFaith.Org, Bothell Chapter meeting. 


September 2007

*  Street Outreach Services (SOS) makes a generous donation to Heroes for the Homeless.  We received computers, office supplies and hygiene kits for clients. 


July 2007

*  We are pleased to announce our partnership with The Emergency Feeding Program of Seattle and King County (EFP).  As a field agency for EFP, we are now able to offer clients their choice of a snack pack or a week worth of non-perishable, canned and dry goods, such as crackers, tuna, spam, and evaporated milk  This is especially critical for those living in camps outside the downtown core.  Without a delivery of long term rations, the homeless only have access to the food they can carry.  We are grateful for this partnership and thank EFP for their support of our work.



June 2007

*  Heroes for the Homeless celebrates our 6 month anniversary!  

*  We are the proud recipients of a grant from The Ernest R. and Audrey M. Turner Foundation of Washington.  Their generous support allows us to operate through the Spring of 2008.

*  Bill and Dena Murray hold their first garage sale ever and donate all proceeds to Heroes for the Homeless.  $400 on the first try!
